READWS is reaching, teaching and advocating for struggling readers in our community who are at an economic disadvantage. We train volunteer tutors, educators and parents to use the evidence-informed best practices of a multi-sensory structured literacy approach. What does that mean? This approach follows a logical sequence, starting with the smallest units of our language, the sounds and letters, and builds skills from there. Everything children learn to read, they learn to spell. Children also use their senses—seeing, hearing, touch and movement—all in the service of learning. This approach is not only about memorization. Rather, it focuses on teaching children the structure and meaning of our language and how our language fits together into a unified whole.
